All-Americans

   3/05/09

This past week, April 1st to the 4th, the Rio Rancho Rams Wrestling team along with the other wrestlers from the state of New Mexico participated in the prestigious NHSCA National Championship Wrestling Tournament. This national event brings together nationally ranked state champions and state placers from all over the United States, many of which are being recruited by the nation’s top collegiate wrestling programs. Along with the top wrestlers from around the Nation, the event also attracts college coaches from every level of competition. Eight Ram wrestlers represented the State of New Mexico that included this year’s State Champions, Jake Williams, Matt Nunez, Louis Trujillo, Chris Rubalcaba, Max Ortega, Chris Morales, and Shea Nolan along with 3x state placer Nathaniel Lujan.

Out of the 8 Ram wrestlers, 4 of them were honored with All-American status placing within the top 8 of their respective brackets. In the sophomore division Matt Nunez placed 5th, in the junior division Louis Trujillo placed 1st  (National Champion) and in the senior division Jake Williams placed 6th, and the 5x state champion Max Ortega was runner-up in the 140 lbs. bracket.

Louis Trujillo is has won the NHSCA Nationals as a Freshman, Sophomore and Junior. If Louis can repeat next year he will be the first wrestler to ever win the tournament four times. Max Ortega is a three time National Finalist; a runner-up as a Sophomore, National Champion as a Junior, and Runner-up as a Senior. Max’s brother Matthew won the Senior National title 2 years ago.
